Simon Evan-Cook takes a look at what investments have worked well over the last decade, and what might work well over the next. In doing so, he questions what risks are being built into clients’ portfolios, and what damage these might cause in the coming years.
Premier Miton’s five Diversified funds are actively managed multi-asset portfolios of direct holdings in company shares and bonds together with alternative investments, including property.
Neil will discuss what has driven investment returns, the team’s current investment outlook, opportunities in different asset classes, managing risk and return in an expected low return and high volatility environment, and current portfolio positioning.
This session will cover an introduction to Premier Miton's new low cost multi-asset solution, the Premier Managed Index Balanced Fund. The fund will be actively managed across asset classes, using index-tracking investments.
Wayne was previously the Senior Fund Manager and Head of Discretionary for the UK multi-asset team at HSBC Global Asset Management and is a highly experienced managed index multi-asset portfolio manager. He will discuss the role and value of active management in building managed index, multi-asset portfolios, and will examine and analyse the range of traditional and non-traditional beta allocation investments available, making this type of low cost multi-asset solution a compelling investment proposition.

Benji Dawes joined the UK equity team in 2014 and has co-managed the Premier UK Growth Fund since November 2017. His investment career began at City Financial where he worked as an investment analyst and assistant fund manager in the UK equity team. Benji is a CFA Charterholder.
David Jane joined the group in June 2014. He founded Darwin Investment Management Ltd in September 2010 and prior to that he was Head of Equities Investments at M&G. David joined M&G in December 2000 as a Fund Manager in the global specialist equity team before becoming Head of Equities investments. Whilst there he was portfolio manager of the M&G Managed Fund and the M&G Cautious Multi Asset Fund, which he launched in February 2007 and grew to over £300 million during his tenure. Prior to M&G, David was the Head of Global Financials Research at AXA Investment Management and before that he was at Newton Investment Management as Director of Global Financials Research. He also served as Non-Executive Director of M&G High Income Investment Trust plc from October 2002 to July 2010. David graduated from Keele University with a B.A. Honours in Economics, Statistics and Operations Research.
Gervais Williams joined the group in 2011. He is Head of Equities at Premier Miton Investors and manages a number of funds and trusts that aggregate to over £1.5bn. His fund management career extends over 30 years including 17 years at Gartmore Group Ltd, where he was Head of UK Small Companies investing in UK smaller companies and Irish equities. Gervais is a member of the AIM Advisory Council, and a board member of the Quoted Companies Alliance and The Investment Association. He was a member of the Patient Capital Review panel with the Chancellor of the Exchequer two years ago where the recommendations were put into legislation in the subsequent budget. Gervais Williams has published three books, 'Slow Finance' in the autumn of 2011 (Bloomsbury), 'The Future is Small' published in November 2014 (Harriman House) and 'The Retreat of Globalisation' published in December 2016 (Harriman House).
Thomas Brown joined the group in November 2015. Previously he worked with Carlos Moreno at Thames River Capital where he was Fund Manager on the Pan-European equities team. Prior to this, Thomas worked at Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management (UK) where he co-managed the European Value & Momentum Fund from April 2014 until November 2015. Thomas also worked for the British Steel Pension Fund for seven years and has held other investment positions including with Scoggin Capital.
Mark joined Premier Asset Management in 2015. Mark has 30 years of investment experience as a Product Specialist and Fund Manager, and joined from Hermes Investment Management where he was a fixed income product specialist. He also previously worked at BlackRock, Aon Advisors and Gartmore in various product specialist and fund management roles.
Darren is Head of Economics and Strategy at Lazarus Research and started his career at The Bank of England in 1988 where he spent five years working within the International and UK Economics divisions. In 1993 Darren joined SG Warburg/UBS becoming their Chief UK Economist in 1994 and was appointed Head of UK Economics and Equity Strategy in 2000. In 2006 Darren joined Cazenove as Head of Economics and Strategy. Following the takeover of Cazenove by JP Morgan in 2010, Darren joined Oriel Securities as Head of Economics and Strategy, leaving in 2013 to run the Economics & Strategy business within Lazarus Research, an independent research provider. Darren produces extensive analysis of the UK economy and the UK equity market.
Mark Polson is founder and principal of the lang cat, a specialist platforms, pensions and investment consultancy. Mark is a prolific writer, contributor to the trade press and international public speaker, even when people ask him not to be. He doesn't play guitar as much as he'd like and spends more time than is reasonable going to gigs aimed at people considerably younger and more tattooed than him.
Mike is Chief Executive of Premier Miton. He was previously Chief Executive of Premier Asset Management and led the merger with Miton Group in November 2019. Mike is also on the main Board of the Investment Association.
Neil is Premier Miton's Chief Investment Officer and fund manager of the Premier Diversified fund range. He joined the group in 2013 from Elcot Capital, where he was part of the team responsible for managing multi strategy investments. Neil was previously Chief Investment Officer of Framlington Investment Management.
Simon is a fund manager in the multi-manager team and also has specialist responsibility for researching overseas equity sectors. Simon joined the group in 2006 and has been part of the multi-manager team since 2007. Before joining the group, Simon worked at Rothschild Asset Management, Gartmore Investment Management and Fidelity Investments.
Mike has over 30 years of investment sales experience and joined the group in 1996. He was appointed Sales Director in January 2013 and is responsible for business development from wealth managers, advisory firms and strategic partners. Before joining the group, Mike worked for Friends Provident.
Ian is Deputy Head of Multi-Asset Funds and Head of Research for the multi-manager team. Ian joined the group in 2000 and has been part of the multi-manager team since 2005. Before joining the multi-manager team, Ian was a senior research analyst covering closed ended funds, and global equity, utility & infrastructure sectors.
David is a senior investment manager in the multi-asset, multi-manager team and joined Premier Asset Management in May 2006. Previously, David worked for several years as an investment analyst before becoming an investment manager in 2004, with responsibility for five discretionary multi-manager portfolios.
Wayne joined the group in October 2019 as Head of Managed Index Solutions following nineteen years at HSBC Global Asset Management where he was responsible for £10bn in multi-asset investments as Senior Fund Manager and Head of Discretionary, UK multi-asset. Wayne graduated from the University of Warwick in 2000 with a first class honours in History and is a CFA Charterholder.
Helene joined the group in September 2019 and is responsible for overseeing Premier Miton’s overall responsible investing strategy and development, including co-ordinating the integration of ESG factors into Premier Miton’s general investment philosophy, process, oversight and reporting on stewardship activities.
Helene joined the group from HSBC Global Asset Management where she was a Senior Responsible Investment Adviser. Her previous roles include, Head of Policy and Research at the Principles for Responsible Investment, Portfolio Director at Low Carbon Ltd and Head of Policy at BT Pension Scheme Management.
Helene has over twenty years of investment industry experience, including considerable experience in responsible investing, including co-ordinating the integration of ESG into investment processes, as well as working as an investment manager.
Helene holds an MA Hons in Engineering Science from Cambridge University and an MSc in Mathematics & Finance from Imperial College, London.
